The Vilakku Literary Society was initiated in 1994 and was established as a non-profit corporation in 1998 by friends of modern Tamil literature living in the United States.

Vilakku is dedicated to the promotion of the understanding of modern Tamil literature and bringing out hidden gems through the individual efforts of its members and in cooperation with literary enthusiasts throughout the world.
